Stiffness and Eigenfrequencies of Press-Fit Acetabular Shell Designs

چکیده
INTRODUCTION: Squeaking of hard-on-hard hip joint bearings has recently become a concern in modern total hip arthroplasty due to its high impact on the quality of life of the patient [1]. Many factors such as malpositioning of implant play a role in the arisal of this phenomenon [2]. The probability of the excitation of audible vibrations is also related to prosthesis design [3]. In particular the first eigenfrequencies of the acetabular shell might play a major role for the susceptibility of a design to squeaking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stiffness and eigenfrequencies of different shell designs and to verify the theoretically assumed relationship between these variables.

Acetabular shell deformation as a function of shell stiffness and bone strength.
Press-fit acetabular shells used for hip replacement rely upon an interference fit with the bone to provide initial stability. This process may result in deformation of the shell. This study aimed to model shell deformation as a process of shell stiffness and bone strength. A cohort of 32 shells with two different wall thicknesses (3 and 4 mm) and 10 different shell sizes (44- to 62-mm outer di...
متن کاملA novel method to assess primary stability of press-fit acetabular cups.
Initial stability is an essential prerequisite to achieve osseointegration of press-fit acetabular cups in total hip replacements. Most in vitro methods that assess cup stability do not reproduce physiological loading conditions and use simplified acetabular models with a spherical cavity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bone density and acetabular geometry on cup stabili...
متن کاملUnsatisfactory results with the cementless Omnifit acetabular component due to polyethylene and severe osteolysis.
A high incidence of acetabular osteolysis (43%), associated with osteolytic lesions in the proximal femur (22.6%) and leading to a high revision rate, was experienced with the Omnifit total hip prosthesis. We reviewed the clinical and radiological results with 429 Omnifit total hips in 356 patients after a mean follow-up of 60 months. Time to revision and wear of the polyethylene liner with dif...
متن کاملA fractured and immovable ceramic liner in a screw-fixed acetabular shell during total hip arthroplasty: a case report.
We report a complication during total hip arthroplasty using an uncemented press-fit acetabular shell and ceramic liner for a woman with osteoarthritis. Fracture of the ceramic liner occurred during its insertion owing to non-concentric reduction. The main body of the ceramic liner became wedged in the acetabular shell and was resistant to removal. The shell itself was immovable owing to the pr...

INTRODUCTION In cementless hip arthroplasty fixation of acetabular cups is often achieved using a press-fit between the cup and the bone, where the acetabulum is typically under-reamed by 1-4mm [1-4] with respect to the size of the cup. Deformation of the cups during insertion remains a concern as it could lead to changes in the clearance and sphericity of the bearing, which can adversely affec...
